Hong Kong Pools – Cool Off Under the Sun
Whether it’s the blazing sun glistening down or insufferable humidity, Hong Kong summers can be brutal. But don’t let the heat suck you down— instead, cool down surrounded by some of the city’s best views at these stunning public pools.
Located on the waterfront at Ma On Shan, this spacious pool looks out towards Tolo Harbour. It features a main pool and spectator stands, plus four waterslides, including one of the fastest in the world.
The pool is manned by lifeguards all day, so you can swim and soak up the sun without worrying about your safety. The water is also well-maintained and clean, and there are even two underwater massage jets to help you relax after a long swim.
If you’re feeling hungry after a long swim, head to the pool terrace for snacks and drinks at the poolside cafe. Then, when you’re ready to dry off, there are plenty of lounge chairs and parasols to choose from so that you can enjoy a lazy afternoon under the sun.
In addition to being a great workout, swimming has several health benefits. It can reduce stress, improve mental wellbeing and increase energy levels. Swimming just three times a week can have a big impact on your overall wellbeing.
But not all pools in Hong Kong are created equal. Some are prone to shortages of lifeguards. According to the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, about 20 of the city’s 45 public pools will only partially open this summer due to a staff shortage. The department has responded by increasing the salary of seasonal lifeguards and recruiting them on two-year contracts.
While many of the city’s outdoor pools are undergoing maintenance, a handful have reopened for the season. Some of them have even redesigned their facilities to make them more attractive to swimmers.
For instance, the luxurious Regent Hong Kong has reopened its iconic pool terrace, which overlooks the city skyline and offers breathtaking harbour views. There are several areas to relax in, including a large heated pool, an infinity pool and a spa pool that features a waterfall, and strong jets for a relaxing body massage.
The outdoor pool at the JW Marriott is heated and offers stunning views of the city skyline. You can also relax on the cosy daybeds and order food and drinks from the al fresco Fish Bar and Pool Lounge, which is right next door.
