The Hong Kong Prize 2023
The Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Prize (STIP) has announced the 2023 Laureates for its Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Life and Health, New Materials and New Energy, and Advanced Manufacturing categories. Each winner receives a prize of HK$2 million sponsored by BOCHK, a certificate, and a trophy.
The prize is a recognition of outstanding scientists and research teams in Hong Kong or research-related institutions set up by Hong Kong higher education institutions and located within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area for their contributions to scientific research and influence on the transformation of R&D outcomes in Hong Kong. It is hosted by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation.
This year’s winners include students from schools across the city. The top team from the Harrow International School Hong Kong was awarded the Gold prize for their research report on “On the Properties of the Semigroup Generated by the RL Fractional Integral”. Kyan CHEUNG Ka-Hin and Ethan SOH Jon-Yi won the Silver prize for their solution to a difficult problem in mathematics. Other prizes were given to students from schools in Hong Kong Island and the New Territories.
The 2023 HLMA also features an illuminating Fireside Chat moderated by Adriel CHAN, Vice Chair of Hang Lung Properties. Dr Owen KO, a former HLMA winner and Assistant Dean (Research) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Ms. Ewina PUN, a doctoral candidate at Brown University, shared their fascinating stories and distinctive perspectives on the power of mathematics in their respective fields.
As a city renowned for its customer service, the people of Hong Kong are always willing to go the extra mile when they feel dissatisfied with their experience at restaurants, retail stores, banks and even public transport. A recent case in point was a man who claimed that he was unfairly denied a cash refund from a claw machine arcade after he inserted a HK$100 bill and only received one HK$5 coin. Despite the man’s protest, the operator refused to provide a cash refund and instead compensated him with the equivalent amount of play rounds.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club is recognizing the outstanding achievements of local athletes by offering a variety of incentives, including free travel passes on MTR Corp’s trains and HK$200,000 cash vouchers for every additional medal won by Hong Kong athletes. This is the fourth year that the Jockey Club has offered these awards. Property developer Sino Group is also joining the fun by distributing HK$200,000 worth of cash vouchers for every additional medal won by a Hong Kong athlete in Paris. In a statement, the company praised the remarkable perseverance of Hong Kong’s athletes and described them as a source of pride for the city. The vouchers are valid until 31 October.
